Wastewater / Water Treatment Plant Lead Operator

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time/Non-Exempt  --  Possible Part-Time Position if preferred.

SALARY: $30.43 - $42.63
POSITION SUMMARY: The Wastewater/Water Treatment Plant Lead Operator is responsible for the daily/routine maintenance of Silver Bay’s Membrane Bio Reactor Wastewater Treatment Plant and Silver Bay’s Public Water Supply. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for the overall operation and compliance of the Wastewater and Freshwater Treatment plants;
  • Monitors and operates electronic and manual controls to operate flow control valves, pump stations, wells, water treatment equipment, and other water quality analyzers to maintain optimum water system conditions;
  • Reads and records various gauges, meters and charts; maintains daily operational log sheets, maintenance records and other reports;
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment; troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment to determine cause and corrective action needed;
  • May collect samples and identifies physical and biological characteristics of wastewater in accordance with local, state and federal requirements; gathers and tests wastewater samples for plant efficiency reports, as required;
  • Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates to regulate flow of sewage; interprets meter and gauge readings, tests results to determine load requirements; starts and stops pumps, engines and generators to control flow of sewage through the filtering processes; 
  • Oversees the training of the Wastewater/Water Treatment Plant Trainee(s) and other certified staff who are responsible for the daily inspection, maintenance, repair, operation and adjustment of pumps, valves, screens, and related mechanical treatment;
  • Oversees the training of the Wastewater/Water Treatment Plant Trainee(s) and other certified staff who are responsible for all necessary laboratory tests and samples; adjusting equipment, cleaning tanks and filters; etc.
  • Required to share responsibility of emergency calls to perform repairs during off-duty hours, including weekend, evening      or night shifts and/or holidays in order to serve our members, guests, and program participants.
  • Performs other related duties as requested.
Requirements QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Must hold and maintain at least one of the following but both certifications are preferred
  • NYS DOH IIA Filtration Plant Water System Operator and Class D certification
  • NYS 2A Wastewater Operator license 
  • Must have two years of experience. 
  • Must hold a high school diploma or equivalent. 
  • The equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, co-workers and others on campus.
  • Must be able to work weekends.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs. Other physical requirements may include standing, walking, kneeling, stooping, sitting, pulling, climbing, and pushing for prolonged periods. Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.
