Carillon Captain (Seasonal)

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Carillon Captain will safely pilot the 60-foot vessel Carillon, touring visitors along the historic waterways of Lake Champlain surrounding Fort Ticonderoga. The Captain is responsible for giving an educational, enjoyable, and safe experience to all guests on board the Carillon. Working under the Senior Captain, the Captain assists in the day-to-day operation of the tour boat. They must assist with the operation and maintenance of the mechanical workings of the tour boat, providing timely communication about maintenance and repairs to the Senior Captain.
 
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
  • Able to talk to an audience of diverse age and backgrounds.
  • Follow, annotate and update operations and maintenance checklists.
  • Clearly communicate with large groups and individuals.
  • Communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
  • Clearly inform visitors of all maritime safety information.
  • Presents a professional image with regards to Fort Ticonderoga in all media
  • Work with a other members of the interpretive staff.
  • Teach and supervise members of the boat crew.
  • Understand and follow the directions of the Senior Boat Captain and all supervising staff.
 

QUALIFACATIONS

  • Must hold a US Coast Guard Master License for Inland Waterways on Passenger Vessels up to 50 Gross Tons.
  • Must have prior experience with 60-foot long passenger vessels or similar craft.
  • Must have previous tour guide or guest service experience.
PHYSICAL EFFORT
  • Able to lift fifty pounds.
  • Able to stand and walk for an extended period (up 4 for hours).
  • Able to be outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Manual dexterity appropriate to the maritime requirements.
 
SAFETY FOR OTHERS
  • Required to ensure the safety of all visitors and crew on the tour boat Carillon.
  • Required to safely navigate with all other boat traffic and reasonable weather conditions.
  • Required to judge whether water conditions and vessel seaworthiness are safe for tours.
  • Required to ensure the safety of the tour boat Carillon and associated docks & equipment.
 
OVERVIEW & GOALS
The Captain pilots the vessel Carillon, giving 90-minute tours to paid visitors. This Captain will execute the day-to-day operations of the tour boat Carillon, including loading, unloading, launching, docking, assisting the Senior Captain with fueling, pump-out, engine maintenance, running gear maintenance, electrical maintenance, deck and hull maintenance. The Captain must assist the Senior Captain in ensuring that all crew and vessel licenses remain current. The Captain must ensure that visitors have an enjoyable and engaging experience touring through the historic waterway that surrounds Fort Ticonderoga. While on duty the first mate will report to this Captain, who is responsible for ensuring that all safety, guest service, and maintenance standards are upheld during their cruises.
 
SCHEDULE
The normal working hours for this position will be determined with weekend, evening, and holiday work required on a scheduled basis. Fort Ticonderoga is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
