Anthony Wayne served the Continental Army heroically from Three Rivers in Canada in 1776 to the Georgia Campaign in 1782. But by the early 1790s, he had fallen on hard times, developing a reputation as a spendthrift, womanizer, and heavy drinker. Still, throughout the Revolution, George Washington had called upon Wayne whenever the situation was desperate. Now, as president, with an Indian confederation blocking the advance of the Americans across Ohio, and with two armies already decimated by the tribes, Washington needed a champion to lead the third army into the Ohio Country. Over the objections of his cabinet, he chose Wayne. Thought to be an unlikely savior by many in his nation, Wayne, though struggling with the illness and depression that had plagued him since the Revolution, raised a new army, and, in summer 1794, headed for a confrontation with the Indians and their British allies at a place known ever after as Fallen Timbers.
