Join us on saturday, september 14th, from 1:00 Pm until 5:00 Pm at our essex quarry nature preserve for the skybeam sculpture opening and guided walks. Join us for an inspiring event featuring artist Mac MacDevitt as he presents his latest project, the SkyBeam Sculptures, at the Essex Quarry Nature Preserve. There will be a presentation at 2:30 p.m., which will feature Champlain Area Trails and Mac, who will delve into the fascinating journey of salvaging the Sky Beams—elegantly curved, laminated cedar beams initially designed for a prototype series of SkyHigh Shelters showcased at the 2013 Champlain Makers Faire. Discover the challenges and triumphs Mac encountered while transforming these structural elements into free-standing sculptures, and gain insights into the design and fabrication process behind these intriguing artworks. After the presentation, short guided walks will highlight the unique history of the Essex Quarry Nature Preserve. The exhibit will showcase panels detailing the evolution of the Sky Beams from their original role in the shelter project to their current incarnation as site-specific sculptures. Spread throughout the Essex Quarry Nature Preserve, these five sculptures integrate 12-foot-long cedar beams into the natural landscape, offering a striking contrast against the organic surroundings of rocks, trees, and trails. Mac's intention is to enrich the natural experience for visitors, providing focused perspectives on the environment and sparking curiosity with each encounter. Come explore how these sculptures invite personal interpretation and transform the landscape into an evolving art experience. WHAT TO BRING: Please bring water, bug spray, and good shoes for walking around. DIRECTIONS AND PARKING: Essex Quarry Nature Preserve is 1/2 mile south of the blinking light in Essex.
