Head Gardener


Job Purpose:
The purpose of this job is to help the company grow and make a profit by:
 Completing jobs efficiently and profitably
 Ensuring that everyone on the crew is working safely
 Ensuring customer satisfaction and company image
 Continuously looking for better ways to do the work

Pay Range: $22-$24 / hour based on experience.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Completing jobs efficiently and profitably
    o Manage crew and job site so each job can be completed correctly, efficiently and profitably.
    o Track labor and equipment hours and material quantities to ensure that crew’s are meeting or
       beating estimated quantities.
    o Review daily goals with crew each morning so that everyone has the game plan.
    o Check trucks and equipment daily for any issues to help minimize equipment repair costs and
       minimize lost time to broken equipment. Report back to Maintenance Manager with any
       problems during that day.
    o Follow systems in place so all employees and crews work in a similar manner.
             Make sure gardener planting crew/team have hand pruner & weeding trowel (on
                  person-clipped to belt or pants)
             Train, observe and verify that all planting on site is being done according to standard
                  operating procedures.
    o Be efficient in the yard each morning and afternoon to ensure that crews roll out in a timely
       manner and with all the necessary tools & materials.
    o Double check to make sure all tools needed to complete the job are on the job site each day so
       no time is lost returning to the shop.
    o Manage planting materials on site to minimize waste.
    o Loading at night for the next day
    o Keep job site organized and clean so materials and tools can be easily located.
    o Report payroll hours on timesheet each day as required
    o Enter all necessary material and equipment notes on the timesheet
    o Report and track additional work so it can be accounted for and billed.
    o Monitor and maintain plant material in plant nursery. Ensure that plants are properly attended
       to and irrigated properly.
    o Monitor plant stock and track plant inventory and planting material inventory.

Ensuring everyone on the crew is working safely
    o As the head gardener-you lead by example and set the tone for the crew.
         Designate teammates for specific tasks while monitoring the project at hand. Focus on
            reviewing the specific details with each crew member before job start.
         Confirm that each team member understands what the goal of their task is and verify
            that each teammate thoroughly understands how to do that task.
o Discuss safety concerns with crew each morning and whenever it is necessary during the work
    day.
o Conduct safety training on equipment so each crew member is familiar with how to use the
    equipment safely and efficiently
o Make sure team is filling out accident reports in a timely manner
o Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment for the job at hand (Safety glasses, gloves, ear
    protection, pants and company shirt)

Customer satisfaction and company image
    o Make sure that all employees are dressed appropriately and upholding our image.
    o Make sure trucks and equipment are being kept clean each day so our company has a good
        image.
    o Ensure that the crew members are following the company culture and professionalism so that
        our company stands out from the rest.
    o Understand the customer’s specific level of service by discussing the goals of each property with
        the Maintenance Manager.
    o Ensure that our crew(s) are meeting our customer’s level of service.
    o Check in regularly with customers to make sure jobs are being completed satisfactorily and that
        our company is meeting their needs.
    o Cross sell to customers as needed to increase sales & profitability

Continuously looking for better ways to do the work
    o Discuss with crew members on a daily basis on how to improve our operations or specifically on
        that project site. Pass along ideas to management team for future discussion and
        implementation.

Success Measures
 Continuously improve working knowledge and skills with necessary training.
 Having a valid driver’s license
 No vehicular accidents and/or traffic violations
 0 Call Backs.
 Work safely to minimize accidents
 Bring each job in on time and on budget
** Verification that 100 % of plants are planted to our company standards.
 Less than 5% of plant loss on a planting job.
 Satisfied customers (0-customer complaints) with Positive Feedback from Clients and Ownership
 1 to 2 ideas to improve efficiency and productivity a quarter.
