Day-Long WWII Commemoration Planned at Ticonderoga Historical Society
“When the Lights Go On Again,” a full day of free activities commemorating the end of World War II will take place on the grounds of the Hancock House at the Ticonderoga Historical Society on August 29.
“This is truly a day of something for everyone,” said Bill Dolback, THS President. “World War II era military vehicles, children’s activities, several programs and speakers of interest, and a rousing tribute to the USO Shows that toured battlefields and field hospitals during the war.”
The event will open at 10 a.m. with a ceremony featuring a color guard from Fort Drum. During the day, exhibits, programs and entertainment will take place, with the USO Show kicking off at 5 p.m.
“We are honored that Fort Drum is sending a color guard, and that groups such as the Green Mountain Military Vehicle Club have placed us on their schedule. We chose to offer this event without cost because the impact of World War II is so important for everyone to remember. The number of veterans from this era is dwindling and we feel this is a fitting event at which to recognize their sacrifices,” noted Dolback.
The USO Show will be a rousing live-variety show featuring “Hot Box Honey” and an array of talented singers, dancers and comedians. A number of surprise appearances by WWII-era celebrities are also promised as part of the show.
In conjunction with the event, the Historical Society is seeking names of military veterans, regardless of their service years, to be maintained as part of an ongoing “honor roll” of those who served in the armed forces. “We are asking people to forward names, branch of service and approximate dates, if known. This is an opportunity to commemorate anyone who served, from the American Revolution through today,” said Dolback.
