The Ticonderoga Historical Society will mark Veteran’s Day with a free
program entitled “The Indestructible Man”. Program presenter will be David Rocco, co-author of “Indestructible Man,” a book about Navy legend Dixie Kiefer. Kiefer (1896-1945) was one of the Navy’s best-known figures during World War II and served as executive officer of the USS Yorktown and commanding officer of the USS Ticonderoga. Kiefer was injured when the Yorktown sank at the Battle of Midway and sustained serious injuries in 1945 when Japanese kamikaze planes hit the USS Ticonderoga.
David Rocco is well known for both his community activism and photographic skills. As a volunteer for many cultural and environmental initiatives in the Hudson Valley and New York City, he played a role in the successful development and eventual success of the Walkway Over the Hudson project. He has served in a number of roles for other projects including the Mt. Beacon Fire Tower Restoration Project, the Beacon Sloop Club, Bannerman Castle Trust, Friends of FDR State Park and Friends of the Mt. Beacon Eight. His photography has been considered for the Pulitzer Prize in Photography and the New York Press Association Award.
The program is free, but reservations are recommended, as seating is limited.
